Illustration Friday - Camouflage

I'm often impressed by the lovely camouflage nature creates. As an artist, I find myself doing things to decrease the effectiveness of nature's camouflage, so that the image shows up better. For example, in this painting of a bobwhite, I added a touch of green to the background to make the bird stand out better.

Acrylics, 2 1/2" x 3 1/2".

Nice handling of the medium...very nice pic...I remember seeing an Audobon artist having the same issue with a shore bird...in real life, the type of shore bird he was painting had eyes that couldn't be seen because they blended in to the head feathers...he debated a long time about 'adding' eyes after finishing the work...he did a couple of tests and was shocked at how 'unnatural' the eyes made the birds appear and took them out...when you looked at the finished product you say to yourself 'that isn't right'...but after seeing it with eyes you realize how the eyeless version was the only workable solution (even as uncomforatable as it made you feel initially)...

Thanks folks, for the complements. :-)

I love painting birds and animals. They are my favorites.

Interesting story, Brine Blank. I can see how he'd want to put the eyes in - people kind of expect eyes.

Beautiful concept and nicely done. If you can make the shape pop up better, it will be great.

both your "camouflage" paintings are very good...I agree w' your point of view, art can't be true imitation...

Aynaku, you are correct. If it were simply imitation, why bother? Just snap a photo, and be done with it.

I love to see the bold strokes in your painting. It tells the tales where your brush had traveled. This is a lovely painting of the Bobwhite.

WOW! Your animal paintings are fantastic! Are these all acrylic? You are a master of the medium!

Thanks. :-)

Yes, Jana, these are acrylics. That's my favorite medium, though I'm gradually becoming more versatile.
